Mastodon Bones in DAYTONA!!!

11/27/11 The digging will continue in a residential area where archaeologists are making a pre-historic discovery.

Workers digging a hole for a retention pond in Daytona Beach earlier this week found what appeared to be pieces of a mastodon.

Archaeologists say they believe it belongs to an American mastodon, an elephant-like animal which lived in Florida thousands of years ago.

On Wednesday archaeologists found part of a mastodon's rib. On Thursday, however, they uncovered two tusks -- about five and a half feet long each.

Part of the jaw, skull, leg and vertebrae were also found.

The dig is bringing out curious locals, excited to see what is being unearthed underneath Daytona Beach. For one boy, it will be quite a story to share with his classmates Monday.

"I'm gonna tell them that right up the street from my house they found dinosaur bones," Jeremy Gilbraide said.

The president of the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach says it will be a while before they can carbon date the remains found, but they could be as many as 100,000 years old.

But they want to eventually exhibit their find next to remains of a prehistoric sloth found just a few miles away from the Mastodon

UPDATE:

12/27/11 A small piece of a mastodon bone found last month in Volusia County is headed for a Smithsonian Institution lab in Maryland, where it will undergo carbon-dating tests.

A tiny chunk of femur bone will help determine how long the mastodon’s skeleton was buried in an area near the intersection of Mason Avenue and Nova Road.

Amateur paleontologists and officials from the Museum of Arts & Sciences unearthed about 20 percent of the mastodon's skeleton in a retention pond construction site.

In about two months, they should know the age of the fossilized remains.

It's believed mastodons became extinct about 13,000 years ago.

Donations overwhelm victims of Ormond Beach fire

Almost one week after a fire burned down an outbuilding, an Ormond Beach family is still receiving an outpouring of help from the community.

So much so that donations prompted the homeowner to rent a storage unit to store some of it.

An overjoyed and overwhelmed Correan Reddin takes a look at a complete bedroom set donated by a woman in Port Orange.

"I've had calls from Jacksonville all the way to Miami," said Reddin of people calling to help.

An early Wednesday morning fire ravaged and destroyed the Ormond Beach outbuilding just days before Christmas.

All the Christmas presents inside were destroyed.

Reddin's two granddaughters, a grandson and three great grandchildren escaped without injury.

Reddin cares for five special needs adults who were evacuated when the fire scorched the adjacent building.

Replacements and donations started coming in just 12 hours after the news made air on News 13:

In fact, the response was so overwhelming, Reddin had to rent a storage unit to store an entertainment center, chair, loveseats and some lamps.

“Christmas this year meant more to me this year because it had Christ in it, because people was giving from their heart to us," said Reddin.
Reddin's family are staying with other family members.

She wants to rebuild so she can provide a roof for her granddaughter and her three great grandchildren.

That fire was blamed on a faulty electrical wiring leading to a microwave oven.

The dry, balmy weather that was Christmas is no more today with a 70 percent chance of rain expected and a high of 79 degrees, the National Weather Service says. There will be southwest winds at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts at 25 mph.

Tonight will bring in a taste of winter with a low temperature of 44 expected and a northwest wind at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

AWWWW....St. Augustine couple celebrates 70 years of marriage!!

ST. AUGUSTINE -- Christmas wasn't just another holiday for one northeast Florida couple -- it was also their 70th wedding anniversary.

Mildred and Melvin McQuaig of St. Augustine celebrated their seventh decade of marriage on Sunday with four generations of their family.

About 90 children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends joined the couple's party.

Eighty-seven-year-old Mildred McQuaig tells The St. Augustine Record (http://bit.ly/tb5g59) that the secret to success in marriage is to "forgive and be forgiven."

Melvin McQuaig is 90. The couple met when Mildred was 14, and after three years they decided to marry. They had to move up their wedding date six months to Christmas Day in 1941 after Pearl Harbor was bombed.

Soldier spends Christmas with family after year in Afghanistan

ORMOND BEACH -- As with countless families, toys were unwrapped in front of the family Christmas tree Sunday morning.

But the biggest and best present Julie Zimmerer and her two young children received this year was having her husband of nine years, Anthony, back to share the holidays after a year in Afghanistan.

"I'm just so glad he's OK and home," she said, as their 6-year-old daughter rocked a toy horse.

About 30 family members and friends greeted Zimmerer, a 35-year-old Army reservist, and celebrated when he arrived home Friday.

"I thought there would just be a couple people," said Zimmerer, a Volusia County sheriff's deputy. "I wasn't expecting a big welcome."

Spending this Christmas again with family made Zimmerer's homecoming all the more special, a day that finished sharing dinner with relatives.

"A couple of months ago, it was still iffy," he said of returning by Christmas. "I'm definitely lucky to be home. It's been a long year."

Zimmerer left the United States for Afghanistan last Jan. 18, where he assisted both military and civilian police with criminal investigations. The scenic, snow-capped mountains that first impressed him upon arrival belied the country's ever-present violence and danger.

There were frequent rocket attacks and, once while on a convoy, a sniper's bullet shattered the protective glass in his truck window, just inches from his head.

"It shook me up bad," Zimmerer recalled of how close he came to death.

His wife, a third-grade teacher at Pathways Elementary, hadn't heard that story before Sunday, and it brought tears to her eyes. Zimmerer hadn't mentioned it in his nightly emails or occasional video conversations online from places like Kabul.

He felt there was no reason to alarm her. She already had her hands full teaching school by day and taking care of Chloe and her 2-year-old brother, Vincenzo, at night and on weekends.

"They stayed strong and it kept me strong," Zimmerer said of his family

Each night, Chloe broke off another one of 365 links on a paper chain that held inspirational or humorous messages -- a gift from church to help count down the days until her father returned. A friend of her mother's also presented a vase filled with 365 chocolate "kisses from daddy," to make the separation a bit more bearable.

"Our anniversary, birthdays and all the holidays apart were very tough," Julie Zimmerer said. "It made me cry to see people over there come on TV and say hi to their families."

But now her husband is back and focused on making up for lost time.

Zimmerer and his wife look forward again to their Friday or Saturday date nights, attending church services as a family and visiting parents and relatives.

"I'm catching up with the kids and doing some home improvements," he said. "I plan on going to some theme parks in Orlando with them."

Then there's the Christmas present his wife gave him Sunday -- a West Virginia ski trip he plans on taking within a couple of months.

In the meantime, Zimmerer is enjoying a bigger and better Christmas gift, simply being back home, safe and far from the rockets red glare.

Keep Your Vehicle Safe During the Holidays

It takes less than a minute for a thief to break a car window and snatch the iPod, laptop, or purse on the front seat. A former car burglar explained how easily it's done.

It happens nearly two million times every year in the United States. Someone like "Randy" breaks into a vehicle and steals whatever he can as fast as he can. Randy is a former "professional."

"I've broken into cars all over Baton Rouge," he claimed. "Broke in cars, stores, houses, everything."

He also said he never got caught. Randy added he has not done anything illegal in more than five years. When his first child was born, he quit that life. Randy described what he would be looking for if he were going to break into a car.

"Just looking for somebody that's not paying attention. The easiest target is a woman with a kid, older person, somebody who's not going to get you back too hard if they do catch you," he explained.

Casing a store in West Baton Rouge, within moments he noticed a truck with its windows down. It serves as a perfect target for a thief.

"Now, he's in the back of the store, can't see nothing while I'm in the center console grabbing whatever I can grab," Randy said.

An elderly lady leaves her windows open as she goes in to pay for the gas. Randy just picked up a DVD player in about two seconds. Of course, he doesn't actually take the newly "stolen" items.

However, Randy doesn't stop there. Just across the parking lot is another juicy tidbit of trouble. Work trucks loaded down with things that are easily pawned and turned into quick cash.

"Because, anything I'm going to do, I'm going to scope it out. I'm over there. I just grabbed a DVD player. Now, I'm looking at all these trucks. They got power tools. Their ladders are tied down with straps. Easy, pair of scissors, pocket knife, just cut it, throw it in the back of the truck, I'm leaving," he added.

The car insurance company Nationwide suggests some pretty simple tips for keeping your valuables safe.

Keep your car visible - Park your vehicle in well-lit areas near people and away from larger vehicles or shrubs. Thieves prefer to work in private.

Hide your valuables - Many smash-and-grab thieves act on impulse. Don't make it easy. Stow your stuff before arrival. Experienced thieves often stake out parking lots watching for people to hide things in their trunk.

Most vehicles are broken into with the intent of actually stealing the car itself - Steering wheel locks, steering column locks like "The Club" and brake pedal locks are all great ways to reduce your chances and encourage thieves to move on and check out someone else's ride.

The most obvious tip is to lock your doors.

As most of you know each year the ContraVest FAMILY, Friends, Vendors, Residents, and Contractors all come together to adopt Bernadette Hanlon our BEAUTIFUL FRIEND and CO-WORKER to give her 6 daughters a Christmas they will never forget!

For those of you who have not heard of Bernadette’s story, she is a single mom with 3 girls of her own and a less than 5 years ago her oldest daughter had a regular babysitting job to watch 3 little girls. Her daughter had an unexpected school event on the same night she had committed to babysitting. The girl’s mother’s name was Amy, that night Bernie offered to cover for her daughter by watching Amy’s girls in her home. Amy’s oldest daughter 13 at the time decided to stay home alone while the other girls stayed with Bernie. That night a turn of events drastically changed all of their lives forever. Amy’s ex-husband broke into Amy’s home tied up her daughter and waited with a knife for Amy to return. When Amy walked into their home she was brutally attacked and murdered in front of her 13 year old daughter. Luckily Amy’s boyfriend who was parking the car walked in just in time to save Amy’s daughter, he too was stabbed in the struggle and fortunately survived. Amy’s daughter’s had only one living relative a grandmother who was elderly and unable to care for the girls… Bernie took these distraught little girls into her home because they had no one. Their father was arrested and charged with their mother’s murder. Fast forward nearly 5 years, Bernie has spent countless hours fighting the system to protect these children. She spent numerous hours at trial to see that their father paid for his crime and numerous hours at doctor’s appointments for child counseling, she is proud to tell everyone that she was able to officially ADOPT the girls!

As you can imagine it’s a difficult job being a single mother of 6 girls! Bernie’s 3 girls have sacrificed so much by welcoming their new sister’s into their very small home. Amy’s daughters have suffered an unforgettable loss in the murder of their mom. No matter how difficult things have been Bernie has been the one constant in their life! Bernie is an “ANGEL” in every since of the word!

It is our honor each year to give this beautiful and certainly deserving family a wonderful Christmas one that they will remember and cherish for years to come! Cubs rally to make title series

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Daytona Cubs, looking hopeless against solid Dunedin pitching through seven innings, erupted for a four-run eighth Thursday and earned themselves a spot in the Florida State League championship series.

No time for rest or reflection, however.

The Cubs' 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays in Game 3 of the best-of-three series at Jackie Robinson Ballpark will be immediately followed by the best-of-five championship series beginning tonight at home.

Daytona will take on the St. Lucie Mets, who won the FSL South Division series in Game 3 on Thursday night by beating Bradenton 4-3 in 10 innings.

"It was a great character check for our guys," said Daytona manager Buddy Bailey. "This was one great series. We felt like we probably could've won all three games, and they're probably sitting over there thinking they could've won all three."

Things looked bleak for the home team and the 1,474 fans at The Jack when Dunedin's Bradley Glenn launched a long two-run homer over the scoreboard in left-center, giving the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead in the eighth.

The Cubs' rally in the bottom half of the inning got started in unlikely fashion.

Catcher Mike Brenly, batting ninth in the order after a sub-par regular season (.206 average), shocked everyone with a bunt single down the third-base line.

"I knew I needed to get on base somehow," Brenly said of his only bunt single of the season. "I'm not the swiftest guy. I was just trying to catch them by surprise."

"You have to do things out of the ordinary sometimes," Bailey said.

The next four batters produced three singles, a walk and two runs. Greg Rohan's line-drive sacrifice fly to left scored Logan Watkins to tie the game at 3. After Abner Abreu singled to right to reload the bases, Matt Szczur singled to right to score Matt Cerda and put Daytona ahead.

The Cubs missed a chance to take a two-run lead when Justin Bour was thrown out at home trying to score on a one-out fly to right by Elliot Soto.

Daytona's Frank Batista pitched a scoreless ninth for the biggest save of the season.

The Cubs will start left-handed pitcher Casey Harman in Game 1 tonight against St. Lucie, with lefty Frank Del Valle starting Saturday's Game 2 at The Jack. The next three games -- or as many as necessary -- will be played in Port St. Lucie.

Both teams threatened early but came up empty.

In the first, after a pair of singles and a wild pitch, the Cubs had runners at second and third with one out.

Bour hit a liner up the middle that found the stabbing glove of Dunedin pitcher Asher Wojciechowski. The ball popped out, but fell harmlessly at the pitcher's feet and Bour was thrown out without the runners advancing. Jake Opitz flew out to end the inning.

If you’re headed out on the water this Labor Day weekend, know this: you are not alone.

News 13’s cameras rode along with a Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officer Saturday around the Ponce Inlet area in Volusia County.
What Officer Clay McDonough was looking for is nothing new for experienced boaters: life jackets, licenses and those boating under the influence.
The 11-year veteran knows it’s going to be a long weekend. “It’s usually the last big boating rush for the summer and everybody seems to come out,” he said.
McDonough remembers another big boating weekend; Memorial Day 2010. He was one of the first officers on the scene in these waters when a 25-foot boat ran over a smaller vessel.
Cyril Holley, Jr., 46, his 19-year old daughter, Madison Holley, and her unborn child were killed in that accident.
That’s why McDonough takes his job so serious because he’s seen the loss of life first hand.
On this Saturday, things got a little exciting while conducting a number of safety checks. The boat’s radio came to life with the report of a boat on fire. We raced across the inlet and found the boat. There was a small electrical fire in the engine compartment, which people on board were able to put out with a fire extinguisher. But not before a number of other passengers jumped overboard and swam to shore. McDonough was able to tow the disabled boat to a nearby marina and made sure everyone was okay.
McDonough was happy to help, but knows that family was lucky. “Everybody's out here just to have fun and you don't think it's going to happen to you," he said. "But there are some boaters who left Ponce Inlet this morning and they're in the water because their boat engine caught fire.”
According to FWC numbers, boating fatalities in the state are down this year. Last year by this time there were 55 deaths, compared to 37 this year.
And if you drink and drive a boat, be prepared to be arrested. In our 12-county region, FWC officers have arrested nearly 50 people for boating under the influence. 21 of those arrests have come in Volusia County.

Shark takes a bite out of New Smyrna surfer

Posted in: News A New Smyrna Beach surfer was bitten by a shark this morning south of Ponce de Leon Inlet, a Volusia County Beach Patrol spokeswoman said.

The shark chomped down on Daniel True, 19, around the ankle and foot about 11 a.m., said Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris. True was wading in about 4 feet of water off the northern area of New Smyrna Beach, at about the 2700 block. Marris said True was not able to see the shark.

The surfer was able to get back to shore and receive medical attention, Marris said. True then drove himself to the hospital.

Marris said Friday's bite was the fourth recorded off Volusia County's coast this year. She said no other sharks have been spotted today.

Dog reunited with owners after being missing for five years

POLK COUNTY -- It's a happy homecoming for a Polk County dog that's been missing for five years.

Kendra Claridy and Kayla Burton adopted the mixed breed from the Animal Shelter in October 2005. They named him "Cane," short for Candy Cane, since he was an early Christmas gift.

But by the following Christmas, Cane was gone. Burton said he was stolen from the family's backyard.

"We always talked about him because he was stolen right before Christmas", she said.

The women didn't think they'd see Cane again. Then, over the weekend, they got a phone call from the Animal Shelter informing them Cane had been found.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office says the dog was picked up as a stray. He was scanned for a microchip and that led Animal Control Officers to his owners.

"I can tell he's still traumatized a little bit", Claridy said. "He's definitely been through a lot but he's adapting."

Claridy said Cane was filthy and covered with fleas. She said a bath took care of that. Otherwise, he seems to be in good health.

"It's shocking", she said. "This is really happening. He's really here. You just never expect that five years later."

Claridy said when she and Burton went to the shelter to pick Cane up, he recognized them immediately.

"I just want to give him a happy life. He's going to have nothing but love and air conditioning and food. He's going to be very well taken care of, that's for sure."

After-school snacks ease long day of learning

Sometimes peanut butter and crackers or a piece of fruit just isn't enough for the kids after a long day of learning. To keep snacking interesting, try one of these simple recipes.

The Peanut Butter and Jelly Cubes need time to set up, so be sure to start them well in advance. The Blueberry Blendies are a quick, healthy frozen beverage that appeals to both kids and adults; it's sort of like a drinkable soft-serve ice cream. Sweet Quesadillas are a fun treat for days when something warm and comforting is called for.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Cubes

Start to finish: 6 1/2 hours ( 1/2 hour active); makes 32 cubes

6 envelopes unflavored gelatin ( 1/4 ounce each), divided
4 cups grape juice, divided
1/2 cup honey, divided
1/2 cup cool water
1 cup boiling water
1 cup peanut butter
8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature

Spray a 9-by-13-inch pan with cooking spray, then line with plastic wrap.
In a medium bowl, combine 4 of the envelopes of gelatin with 1 cup of grape juice. Let sit for 5 minutes.

In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the remaining 3 cups grape juice and 1/4 cup of the honey to a boil. Pour into the bowl with the gelatin and stir until the gelatin is dissolved. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and refrigerate until firm and set up, about 3 hours.

In a small bowl, combine the cool water with the remaining 2 envelopes of gelatin. Let sit for 5 minutes, then add the boiling water. Stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Set aside.

In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the peanut butter, cream cheese and remaining 1/4 cup of honey until smooth. Slowly beat in the gelatin mixture. Pour and spread this mixture over the set up grape jelly in the pan. Refrigerate and allow to set up completely, about 3 hours.

Using the plastic wrap to assist, remove the set up gelatin from the pan and peel off the plastic wrap. Cut into cubes. Store in the refrigerator for up to five days.

Blueberry Blendies

Start to finish: 10 minutes; serves 4
15-ounce package frozen wild blueberries
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons honey
pinch cinnamon (optional)
pinch cardamom (optional)

In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.

Sweet Quesadillas

Start to finish: 20 minutes; serves 4

1 tablespoon butter
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4 ounces cream cheese
8 flour tortillas (6-inch)

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the apples, brown sugar and cinnamon. Cook, stirring gently, until the apples are just tender, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a bowl.

Spread the cream cheese over 4 of the tortillas. Divide the apple mixture between the tortillas, spreading it over the cream cheese. Top with the remaining 4 tortillas.

In a clean dry skillet over medium-high heat, toast each assembled quesadilla, about 2 minutes per side. Serve warm.

Daytona State College exhibits revisit the day that changed US

DAYTONA BEACH -- The 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 will be commemorated in an exhibit that opens today at Daytona State College's Southeast Museum of Photography.

"A Second Telling -- September 11: here is new york" features photographs from the museum's permanent collection. The images were acquired from a 2002 exhibition that was organized in response to the World Trade Center attacks.

Four other exhibits, collectively titled "In Review: War," also open today at the museum. Each depicts various aspects of the subsequent war in Afghanistan.

The roots of the "here is new york" exhibit go back to four individuals in the days immediately following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. The seed was planted when one of the organizers, the owner of a vacant storefront on Prince Street in New York City's SoHo district, taped up a nondescript picture of the World Trade Center in the window of his shop.

The foursome sent out a call for others to submit photos. According to a press release from the museum, "the response was immediate and overwhelming. By Christmas, over 1,500 photographers had contributed more than 4,000 images, and more than 250,000 people had made their way to Prince Street to view them."

The goal of that project "was to collect, organize, display and preserve for historical purposes the broadest possible view of this event and its aftermath," the museum press release said.

When the photos were organized into a formal exhibit in 2002 titled "here is new york," the Southeast Museum of Photography was one of only a few places outside of New York City to show the images.

Of the 1,200 photographs that originally were exhibited at the museum in spring 2002, more than 50 were acquired by the museum for its permanent collection. The images include photos taken by professional and amateur photographers.

Also as part of "A Second Telling," a video titled "The First 24 Hours," which was shot during the 24 hours immediately following the tragedy, will be shown continuously in the museum.

The four exhibits of "In Review: War" feature portraiture, documentary and reportage photography by Ed Grazda, Louie Palu, Lucian Perkins and Christopher Sims. The exhibits, which also open today and run through Oct. 2, include:

· Ed Grazda, "Excerpts: Afghanistan Diary" -- Grazda was one of the last photographers to leave Afghanistan before the Taliban decreed a ban on photography, music and television. Grazda has spent 20 years photographing in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

· Louie Palu, "Afghanistan: Garmsir Marines" -- Palu photographed U.S. Marines operating in Garmsir, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, where intense fighting took place in 2008. Palu's portraits were taken in the final weeks of this unit's operation and time in Afghanistan.

· Lucian Perkins, "A Journey Through Afghanistan" -- Perkins' photos, taken in late 2001, show the immediate aftermath of the initial battles in Afghanistan between the Taliban and U.S. forces.

· Christopher Sims, "Theater of War: The Pretend Villages of Iraq and Afghanistan" -- Sims' photographs depict the fictitious Iraqi and Afghan "villages" that serve as U.S. military training grounds for many soldiers prior to tours in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Publix, Winn-Dixie part of ground beef recall

DODGE CITY, Kan. -- At least three major grocery store chains have recalled some of their ground beef packages because they could be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., Publix Super Markets Inc. and Kroger Co. announced the recalls mainly in the southeastern U.S. and said they stem from problems at the National Beef Packaging Co. of Dodge City, Kan.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday that National Beef was recalling more than 60,000 pounds of beef after the Ohio Department of Agriculture found the bacteria during routine testing.

The recalls affect products sold mainly in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina and Tennessee, but the meat was sent to several distributors and could have been repackaged for consumers and sold nationwide.

The agriculture department says there have been no reports of illnesses. A spokesman for National Beef said the company has never had a problem with E. coli. It is checking processes and procedures in an effort to find the cause and prevent it from happening again, the spokesman said.
E. coli can be deadly and can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and other problems. The agriculture department cautioned people to cook ground beef to a temperature of at least 160 degrees. The temperature should be checked with a food thermometer that measures internal temperature, the agency said.

The meat also was distributed to meat packing companies in Detroit and Indianapolis and to Wal-Mart operations in Indiana, Pennsylvania and Wyoming, National Beef said.
At Kroger, the nation's largest traditional grocery store chain, the recalled products include ground chuck, ground beef patties, and meatballs and meat loaf made in the stores. Packages have "sell by" dates of July 29 through Aug. 12. At Publix, the products include meatballs, meat loaf, ground chuck patties, stuffed peppers, seasoned salisbury steak and others with "sell by" dates of July 25 through Aug. 12. Winn-Dixie products include ground chuck and patties with "sell-by" label dates from July 31 to Aug. 12.

The companies said people should return the beef to their stores for a full refund.

This Weekend is the Statewide Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday

Statewide event begins at midnight

DAYTONA BEACH -- This weekend, consumers can take advantage of a statewide back-to-school sales tax holiday.

Beginning midnight tonight and running through Sunday, certain items including clothing up to $75 and some school supplies up to $15 will be exempt from both state and local sales taxes.

In Volusia County, that will save consumers 6.5 percent on their purchases; in Flagler, 7 percent.

WHEN: The statewide back-to-school sales tax holiday begins at the stroke of midnight tonight and ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

WHAT'S COVERED: The sales tax-free weekend exempts clothing, wallets and bags up to $75 from sales tax and some school supplies up to $15. Items exempt from sales tax this weekend include bow ties, bathing suits and fishing vests, as well as more obvious items like sneakers and regular clothes.

WHAT'S NOT COVERED: Printer paper, staplers and corrector fluid are among the more surprising items to still have sales tax charged, as well as most sporting equipment and books.

EXTENDED HOURS: At Volusia Mall, two of the mall's department stores will offer extended hours this weekend. JCPenney will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday. Macy's will have extended hours on Sunday, opening at 11 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m. Sears and Dillards will have regular store hours.

The Belk department store at The Pavilion at Port Orange shopping center will have extended hours as well: from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday

Artificial Reefs = Fishy Oasis!!

Area fishermen and divers were on hand to watch as a crew sunk a 195-foot-long barge off the Volusia County coast Friday morning. It took about 3.5 hours before the barge sank below the surface, about nine miles from Ponce Inlet. It's the latest in a series of additions to the county's artificial reef program, and by far the largest piece placed on the sea floor this year. When all is said and done, the county wants to have 90 artificial reefs, which will double the number they had before the year began. County Manager Jim Dinneen told News 13 this is a win-win situation.

Most of the material, such as concrete pipes and other construction materials, would have wound up in landfills. Now, companies can donate the concrete and, in some instances, get a tax write-off to boot.The artificial reefs are important in this section of the coast. "This area is like a desert, and these artificial reefs are like an oasis of fish and marine life," said Jim Oddie, a dive instructor who watched the barge sink. A study involving such reefs off the Florida panhandle showed for every dollar spent on building reefs resulted in $138 in economic impact to a local economy.

Tips to Protect Yourself From Car Theft

Please remember the world should not always be seen with rose colored glasses....

Below are just a few tips on vehicle theft safety.....

■Always lock your car whenever it is unattended, even for a moment.

■Leave nothing visible in your car; this is an invitation for theft. Do not leave expensive property, such as laptops, CD cases, money, purses, cell phones, and portable stereos in plain view in your car. Lock them in your trunk or take them with you. Cover up conspicuous stereo equipment. It’s a no-brainer for a car thief, to choose the car with the iPod and GPS in plain view, versus a car with nothing valuable visible!

■If you have expensive stereo equipment in your car, consider investing in a car alarm. If you have a car alarm, turn it on whenever you leave your car unattended.

■Record the brand, model numbers, and serial numbers of all electronic equipment installed in your car. In the event of theft, give this information to the police. If the equipment is recovered, it can then be returned to you. Also engrave your driver's license number on this equipment.

■Use a steering wheel lock when your car is parked. While these devices are not foolproof, a thief may decide it's not worth the effort. Consider installing a LoJack or other stolen vehicle tracking and recovery system.

Also:

• Don’t forget to take your keys! Many times people are in a rush and they leave their keys in the ignition or on the seat or on top of the car. This is especially easy to do with keyless entry technology that comes with many newer cars

• Lock all the doors, roll up all the windows, make sure the trunk is locked and don’t ever leave the vehicle running, (regardless of how much you want to keep that AC RUNNING!!) don't make your car an easy target for thieves.

• Park in areas that are well lit, open and populated. Park in view of a security camera, security guard or parking attendant, when possible. Park in your garage if you have one. And don’t leave your car in a parking lot for an extended period of time.

We have notice that lately there have been quite a few motorcycles taking up one parking space for a long period of time. And not even parked in a way that others can use it.
This is very inconsiderate to your neighbors, especially where parking is tight.

We are asking that you leave enough room for another bike rider in the same building/area to park their bike next to you. We are also asking all motorcycles owners to please look for a space that another bike is already occupying and “share it”

We understand that you may share a spot and when one person leaves it would appear you parked alone however we hope another motorcycle driver will see yours sitting alone and follow the same rules and will park next to yours.

If this is not something that can be done then please consider getting a garage for parking.
